Jio leads in active user growth
India’s telecom sector expanded in June, with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel driving the increase. The latest figures from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India show the country’s total telephone subscriber base reached 1.348 billion by the end of the month, up from 1.343 billion in May.
Airtel leads subscriber growth, Jio dominates active users
Airtel added 3.163 million subscribers in June, the most of any operator. Mobile users accounted for 2.989 million of these additions, while wireline connections made up the remaining 173,078. The company became the largest contributor to overall growth for the month.
Jio followed with 2.291 million net additions, including 2.146 million wireless and 144,057 wireline customers. Together, the two providers represented nearly 87% of India’s total net subscriber additions.

Jio outperformed in active wireless users, however. It added 3.33 million active subscribers, bringing its total to 498.9 million. That share gave the company 41.5% of the 1.201 billion active wireless users nationwide.
Airtel gained 2.92 million active wireless users during the same period. Vodafone Idea, BSNL, and MTNL all saw declines in their active subscriber bases.
Wireless and broadband expansion persists
Wireless subscriptions climbed to 1.30 billion in June, up from 1.294 billion the previous month. The wireless segment included 1.147 billion consumer mobile connections, 134.7 million machine-to-machine links, and 17.8 million fixed wireless access users.

Broadband subscriptions also rose, reaching 1.087 billion. Jio remained the largest broadband provider with 532.2 million subscribers, while Airtel followed with 379.9 million. Vodafone Idea had 130 million broadband users, and BSNL and Atria Convergence trailed with 27 million and 2.45 million, respectively.
Jio led the wireline segment with 15.63 million subscribers after adding 144,057 fixed-line users. The company also controlled the 5G Fixed Wireless Access market, where it added 145,790 new connections to reach 9.11 million subscribers. That figure represented 70.5% of the national total. Jio was the only operator offering 5G Unlicensed Band Radio fixed wireless services, adding 201,302 subscribers in June.
TRAI’s report mentioned that calls from the 1600 number series cannot be blocked through the DND app, which only filters the 140 series.
