Markel strengthens marine transport leadership amid rising risks
Markel has expanded its marine transportation division by naming Dean Johnson as head of transport and logistics and Rhys O’Neill as head of marine liability. These appointments come after the insurer consolidated its hull and machinery, marine and energy liabilities (M&E), and transport and logistics operations into one unified marine transportation unit as part of its restructuring.
Johnson’s responsibilities include growing Markel’s transport and logistics offerings while overseeing risk evaluation and pricing strategies. He will also refine the company’s product suite to better address changing threats in the industry. O’Neill, by contrast, will steer the marine liability division, driving profitable expansion across the M&E portfolio while mitigating complex exposures through broker collaborations.
The two executives highlighted the escalating pressures within marine insurance. O’Neill pointed to rising geopolitical tensions as a key factor, describing how risks now intertwine in ways that demand more sophisticated responses. He stressed that Markel remains focused on delivering consistent service quality for brokers despite these disruptions.
Johnson emphasized his immediate focus on product development and service enhancements, along with tighter alignment between underwriting teams and broker networks. His strategy aims to deliver more transparent coverage options and sustainable solutions in a period where risk oversight requires sharper focus.
